So Fresh and Clean – behind the scenes with Auto Detail

albuquerque auto detail fathers fathers building futures nonprofit social enterprise

On any given day, you’ll find a handful of dads working to make Albuquerque residents’ cars shine. For most of the participants, this is the first department they work in at Fathers Building Futures. It’s hard work and the weather definitely is a factor—the summer heat, the winter cold and the rain, which puts the work to a halt—but it’s a great way to learn both technical and soft skills that helps participants build a strong work ethic.

Leading our Auto Detail team is George Sandoval. George started under the fatherhood program with PB&J in 2014. He then became as staff member in March 2015 and promoted to Auto Detail Lead April 2016. Since then, over a thousand cars come through the shop. He’s worked on detailing cars of all sizes from the small economy cars, to luxury cars, to the rigs at Albuquerque Studios, and finally to City of Albuquerque’s solid waste trucks. And, he’s seen all degrees of dirty vehicles, but one thing is constant, making sure they shine when they leave Fathers Building Futures.

Every day he supervises and mentors the on-site auto detail team to ensure the Standard Operating Procedures and safety protocol are being followed, and that we are providing the best service and quality to our customers. What he enjoys about his role, as lead, is that he’s typically the first one to work with new clients. According to George, “It’s always a new challenge. These guys are new to the organization. I get to know where they come from and their background. It’s interesting to be able to mentor them and see them become more confident in building their futures.” His advice, “Don’t go back to the people or the environment that got you in trouble in the first place. Stay focused and have your priorities right.”

As a dad to a daughter and a stepfather to four other children, his legacy is to be known as a great father and a hardworking provider. George is also responsible for the facility and vehicle maintenance. Vehicle maintenance continues in his free time as a “super mechanic” at home; he talks about spending all his free time working on his family’s vehicles and it’s not uncommon for the FBF staff to ask him questions about their own vehicle issues. What’s in George’s future? He’s focused on the present and building a better life.
